Machine
health diagnostic services (SDS):
WE ARE
in
the business of protecting our Customer’s businesses
- our engineers specialize in providing information
for solving machinery problems. Such problems are
not uncommon and troubleshooting can be expensive
in terms of repair costs and down time. These problems
can be complex, with no apparent “quick“
solution. In order to get machinery back on line as
quickly as possible, one often needs diagnostic checks,
meaningful information and pre-emptive action based
on proper gathering, understanding and analysis of
data using the most sophisticated tools. Production
output and corporate profits depend on it so we know
that Customers need result oriented actions, not just
raw data, to help determine what is wrong with a machine,
how long it can operate in its present condition,
and how can the problem be corrected. This is the
only way one can make sound decisions in critical
situations.
It
may not be economically feasible for one company to
maintain in-house inventory of the above skills and
equipment & and keep replenishing/updating it
to undertake such diagnostic activities - this is
where Sherman Diagnostic Services (or SDS) can be
of help. SDS is a division of Sherman International
Pvt. Ltd, who has been providing products and services
for over 30 years to the Industry.
Result
oriented actions are key and there are three important
elements that are needed to generate this - they are:
•
Proper human capital, skills, training, exposure,
knowledge, focused approach, contract handling capability
and tools (i.e. monitoring and test instruments).
• Intellectual Capital to analyse and translate
raw data into ‘meaningful information’.
• Credibility through years of experience to
suggest corrective actions using this ‘meaningful
information’.

OUR EXPERIENCE
is
wide and varied. We have completed many prestigious
assignments. We have been fortunate to handle some
very large projects - one such job includes monitoring
machines along India’s LARGEST gas pipeline
for about 10 years. This mammoth job includes monitoring
about 900 Pump Motor sets, about 100 Reciprocating
Pump & Compressors, about 50 Gas Turbine with
Compressors, over 20 Diesel Engines with pumps, approximately
10 Gas Turbine Driven Generators, about 5 Expander
Compressors and some other rotating equipment along
the pipeline and have built not only a strong reputation,
but
INTELLECTUAL
CAPITAL AND SKILLS ASSET
have
been built working
• in Various locations,
• in Various plants,
• on Various equipment,
• covering Various Customers,
• in Various conditions
for over 12 years now.
OUR
ACTIVITIES AND OFFERINGS
are
focused and result oriented. SDS is experienced in
interpreting spectrum analysis, trend analysis, orbit
/ time base analysis, shaft average centreline position
analysis, rpm versus time plot analysis etc. Besides
Vibration measurement & analysis, problem diagnosis
of rotating / reciprocating machines & structures
likes piping etc. SDS also offers insitu dynamic balancing
of Turbines, Generators, Motors and Fans, machine
audits, consultancy on corrective actions, Failure
analysis & predictive Maintenance. We can diagnose
vibration related problems on Turbines, Compressors,
Generators, Pumps, Fans, Blowers, Gear Boxes, Motors
etc. The type of Problems which can be identified
are: Unbalance, Misalignment / Preloads, Fluid induced
instabilities (Whirl / Whip), Rubs, Loose parts (Rotating
and stationery), Structural resonance, Foundation
Problems, Rolling element bearing defects, Rotor bows,
Fluid film bearing faults, Thrust Problems, Gear Problems
etc.

We
use BN’s Snap Shot & TK analyzer series
and SKF’s Micrologs. The Snapshot is a double
channel equipment which is used to collect data
which can be retrieved on to a software called SSPLUS
using which we can get different outputs. The SKF
Microlog is a single channel equipment working along
the PRISM4 software. The TK 81 is used to see the
amplitude of vibration in all three modes while
the TK 83 is used for Phase analysis, which helps
in devising methods for proper balancing. This is
very useful for balancing jobs. We have also been
asked to use, at times, the ADRE for TRANSIENT MODE
analysis.
Our team takes these equipments along with necessary
Transducers to the various rotating machinery installed
in Plants. They also take reading from the vibration
monitors installed in control rooms. After taking
readings they transfer the data obtained into a
computer that is used to generate (a) various plots
and (b) trend graphs including generating Spectrum,
Orbit and Shaft Centre Line Graphs etc. All these
reports are then analyzed based on our intellectual
capital. We then consult the Customer on corrective
actions that result in improving the operating condition
of the rotating machinery and plant output and efficiency
levels by reducing unplanned breakdowns and allowing
Plant operators to take predictive and preventive
action based on our consultancy to ensure a very
high degree of the machine availability. This not
only results in longer life of the equipment but
also saves money. Once corrective action is taken,
we again conduct an analysis based on vibration
data to confirm if our recommendations have been
of value. We are provide Clients with reports related
to/for/covering:
